need info on activator (chiropractic)

Question:

hello all , heard about a treatment called the activator, can someone enlighten me on just what it is. and if anybody has had any good or bad experiences with the procedure. thanks so much      fred

Response:

I do not use the Activator technique.  However, when I do have a patient with significant osteoporosis, whom I do not wish to apply excessive downward pressure upon for fear of a possible rib or spinal fracture, I will use the activator to impulse the joint and aid in restoring joint mobility with the small sheer force the hand held impulse (clicker) provides.  I have found that with manual mobilization and joint motion techniques along with the activator to impulse the necessary joints that I can get good joint pain relief for the patient without having to do a dynamic thrust of any harmful magnitude. — Rollie Pollie

There’s quite a bit more to it than what Rich/Badanes posted, but that’s the gist of it, I suppose.  Frequently Activator is seen as a "good for old people and really little babies" technique, however if applied properly it can be effective for anybody.  I have used it in cases where it seems that the muscles are more involved than the joints themselves, but I use the technique rarely. In order to be proficiency rated by Activator Methods a doctor has to attend a certain number of seminars and pass practical and written exams, so there is a difference between a certified Activator chiropractor and one who uses the tool a bit more haphazardly.  As far as being able to learn it in a weekend, I wouldn’t go that far.  At Palmer College it is offered as an elective, with 48 hours of classroom instruction if I remember correctly.  I have only been adjusted using the technique once, and I felt strangely relaxed afterward, but I didn’t have any symptoms to begin with, so judging its efficacy in those terms in my experience is not possible. While it is a very high frequency, low amplitude adjustment, it is not uncommon for patients to be quite sore after the technique has been applied.  Some are obviously more sensitive than others, but my wife, for example, who has no problem with other chiropractic techniques, will not come near an Activator instrument!  You’ll just have to try it and see for yourself.  Also, for what it’s worth, the Activator instrument is approved and regulated by the FDA.

Response:

The Activator can be set to travel 1/16" to 1/4".  It  delivers a gentle thrust which is more than 20 times faster than your bodies reflexes can respond to it. Therefore you cannot tighten up to stop it. It is not painful.     The Activator system has an extensive number of tests which are used. Advanced testing is used to address specific complaints or more "difficult cases". If a person is asymptomatic these tests can still be used to determine problems and correct them as needed. Therefore it is excellent for use as a preventative system of treatment.  Because it is systematic, areas are only adjusted when it is indicated and left alone when it is not indicated. Therefore areas are not "over adjusted".     An experienced practitioner can do a thorough and effective adjustment in just a few minutes providing he/she is familiar with the persons case.     This technique has been shown through research to be more reproducible from doctor to doctor than other methods which depend on what the doctor is "feeling".  Also the force of the thrust does not vary with the strength or temperament of the doctor. Activator Methods is the most researched chiropractic technique.     It’s popularity is growing because of its effectiveness and its safety to the patient. It is effective on anyone large or small. If some practitioners are seeing 100 to 300 patients per day then patients must be liking it. Believe me attracting that many paying customers to your door everyday is not that simple.     The Activator system is taught in most Chiropratic Colleges. The course is offered in addition to the usual program. Students are only allowed to learn it in the later part of their training, since a great deal of background information is required to understand and apply this technique. To make this technique available to as many chiropractors who desire to learn it, Activator Methods International holds regularily scheduled seminars throughtout the world. Doctors must attend a certain number of seminars before they are allowed to sit for the written and practicle examination.  If they pass they are given certification. They are then allowed to continue on to learn the advanced treatment protocols and write the advanced exam.     I give you all this information to let you know that there chiropractors that are well trained in this system. Not all chiropractors are trained in this and not all chiropractors are interested in this. If you want Activator treatments you may wish to seek out someone who has advance training. Reply to Freds request for info on 12/14/01. Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique is a technique which uses a hand held instrument which delivers a very fast but gentle thrust to make the correction required. Like anything that requires skill, the results will be best with the chiropractor that is skilled in this method. Checkout the website: www.Activator.com
