Hi, Right, I’ve heard that the early Twins (blackfaces from 60’s) are considered to be especially good. But was there any special year that Fender Twin Reverbs started to get bad? What about the 70’s? Early 80’s? The reason I wonder is that I’m offered to buy a Twin from 1980. And I might have to buy it unheard since the seller lives fa-a-a-aar away from me. So is an 1980 Twin something to get or avoid. The price I’ve gotten is good and quite a bit below what is normally asked for a mid 70s Twin where I live. (In Sweden that is). So, if anyone could please enlighten me I’d be most grateful. Or if you could direct me to a webpage covering this, or a Twin FAQ. Thanks!! Carl PS. And if I can buy this 1980 Twin for 7000 SEK (swedish currency)or a 1976 Ampeg VT-22 for 5000 SEK. Which one should I get? (I play a Guild CE-100DP and hope for a warm, clean sound.) It seems both would suit me fine, but the Ampeg has got no tremolo. And I’m thinking I might actually start using tremolo pretty soon. Thanks again! D.S. PPS. I understand that I’m choosing between "really heavy amp" and "extremely heavy amp".

Response:

It is most likely an ultralinear model Twin Reverb. Ask yourself this question: "How clean do I want the amp to be?". If you are going for the cleanest sounds possible, this is the amp to get. If you are into Jazz/Country this is a good amp. If however you are looking for that classic blues overdriven sound, this amp won’t cut it. For that matter, any Twin will need to be LOUD to get that kind of breakup. On the other hand, I haven’t found a better amp than the UL 135watt Twin Reverb for distortion pedals and modeling ‘devices’. A UL Twin does this perfectly, sounds great with a Zvex Fuzz Factory in front of it. Again, if you are looking for the typical Fender blues sound, look elsewhere. But if you plan on running osme pedals in front of this one and the price is decent, it may be worth a look.

Yep, I totaly agree. I have one in repair; need a recap. These monsters are HEAVY!!! The wheels are of no much help if you have to lift it up on the bench. An idea is to fill the enclosure with helium ballons so it float’s. Makes carrying it around a lot easier. Cheers, Marco

Although not quite the same method as described above, there’s a pretty useful guide to this here: http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html And although this is described for the guy’s own sig bass, it works just the same for other basses.
> I’ve been tweaking my basses lately and have been battling the issue of neck > relief. While holding the string down at the first and last fret, one guide > suggested I aim for a .3 to .5 mm gap. Is this correct? Or should it be 3 > to 5 mm?

The correct way to set up any adjustable fretted neck is to set it to zero relief, inspect it at every fret for level with proper straightedges & level it (if needed & using suitable tools), then see if it will play at no relief (which a few will), and add relief a little at a time until it plays well with as little relief as possible at the desired action height. The general fact that many happen to play best at a certain range of relief with typical actions heights is not any instruction to set relief to some particular amount. "Setting relief" is a popular but amateurish idea with no real foundation. Instead, set the instrument up to play its best at the desired action (and correct intonation), and as long as it doesn’t end up looking like a bow and the rod is not excessively tensioned or too loose, it is "correct" for that action, those strings, this weather and that player & style. Anything beyond this is witchcraft, or maybe bull shit, but not luthier-y or tech-ery. You will never see a competent luthier measuring relief to adjust it, it is a joke. For example, my main working axe (not a bass) has wood which moves all over the place with each seasonal change & requires readjustment, and so would have 4 different "correct reliefs" for the same action setup – which is quite low in my older, lazy age. Practically speaking, I never measure it & it only takes 2 or 3 minutes to readjust it.

Ban cotton!!!!! When you see the dust mites that live in the lint collected in your navel, you are going to take a shit. In the mean time, a drop of kerosene on that cotton will kill them little bastards DEAD. BTW, a drop of kerosene on a small cotton ball will lubricate and cure a ticking vibrato problem in most amplifiers too. Not to mention, a rubbing voice coil in a speaker too. There are many great uses for kerosene and cotton. Just remember to never use cotton shirts, to avoid lint collection in your navel.
FYI … Bush and his "crew" did not *lie* about WMD’s. They simply repeated what they thought were facts that were passed on to them by our intelligence sources and by intelligence sources from the governments of other countries. In fact, you can’t even show that *ANYONE* within our government accurately knew otherwise … If you are going to call Bush a liar, you may as well call your two Johns liars, as well. "I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force– if necessary– to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." Sen. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation … And now he is miscalculating America’s response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real …" Sen. For more than two decades, Saddam Hussein has sought weapons of mass destruction through every available means. We know that he has chemical and biological weapons. He has already used them against his neighbors and his own people, and is trying to build more. We know that he is doing everything he can to build nuclear weapons, and we know that each day he gets closer to achieving that goal." — John Edwards, Oct 10, 2002 "We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002 "We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002 "In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." Sen. Stomp your feet and feign being "hurt" or "insulted", but someone who tells a lie is a liar. Main Entry: [4]lie Function: noun Etymology: Middle English lige, lie, from Old English lyge; akin to Old High German lugI, Old English lEogan to lie 1 a : an assertion of something known or believed by the speaker to be untrue with intent to deceive Precisely what you just did. And since you brought him up (AGAIN!!!) …. "And from Dick Morris, about his years in the inner circle at the Clinton White House: "Everything was more important than fighting terrorism. Political correctness, civil liberties concerns, fear of offending the administration’s supporters, Janet Reno’s objections, considerations of costs, worries about racial profiling and, in the second term, surviving impeachment, all came before fighting terrorism." One can argue that 3,000 lives were cut short due to frivolous preoccupation of the Clintoon Administration.
>Bush and his "crew" did not *lie* about WMD’s. They simply repeated >what they thought were facts that were passed on to them by our intelligence >sources and by intelligence sources from the governments of other countries.

Bullshit. There was a concerted effort by Cheney et al to disregard anything that didn’t agree with their preconceived notions and support their desire to invade Iraq. They refused to look at any of the myriad of intelligence sources that were telling them that Saddam had no WMD. They lied through their teeth.

You know, I your logic calculator seems to be in calibration. I’m getting freaking tired of those making claims, like "They Lied", followed with the characterization, and not a direct quote of the lie in question. THIS, is a case of one getting stuck with the responsibility, and the other on the outside free to criticize and characterize, the one holding the responsibility. Kerry has the unique advantage of being the outside critic, doing the Monday morning quarterbacking BS. Based on what was in front of both Kerry and Bush, BOTH agreed on the same intel, at the same time, as did other governments. SORRY, I ain’t buying any of this shit. Now, all I hear is Kerry singing Bush’s song. Wow, imagine that. But, he wants to work with other countries, yet says NO, to a pink slip from the UN. If the tables were turned, would the situation be anymore correct!!!!!!! Now, since you think my post was a joke…… let’s paste a little thing you did not bring with you here. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->> CHENEY’S MISLEAD: "I have not suggested there’s a connection between >> Iraq and 9/11" >> THE TRUTH: As the Washington Post reports today, Cheney has repeatedly >> insinuated and "strongly suggested" that Saddam Hussein was behind the >> attacks on September 11th.[2] >As did Edwards. Go read his speech >from Sept 12, 2002. So get off >your high horse, unless you’re going >to blast both of them. Otherwise, >you’re in the same moral swamp as >whomever you’re blasting. > At worst, Edwards was falling > for the administration’s line > of BS just like most of > Congress — but Cheney was > involved in *creating* it. > Edwards is on solid ground, > Cheney is up to his lying > mouth in quicksand.

So, you have those in the news, editorial, Op Ed, (Hi Ed <wink>) mass media all trying to pull a Dan Rather, and scoop the next guy. You know, the wanna be’s after http://www.drudge.com/ You guys just cut and paste these ass hole views to support your man, or raised issue. The bottom line to me is, there is nothing different that Kerry could have done, and not repeat what Bush did, if he has National Security in the forefront. You HAD to go after Saddam, to open up his shell game. Even the inspectors could NOT say, there were NO WMD’s anywhere in Iraq. He’s just another rich ass mother fu_king lefty Liar Bull Shit Artist, with his finger in the wind, His voting record is out there, and it does not match up with the crap he pukes up in the media. <thinking> One last point, then I’m back to work. I don’t hear a lot of FACTS from the Kerry camp. All I hear is a shit pile of characterization, in your end doe, and shit slinging. That shit never came out of the Bush camp. Character assignation is all you guys are good at. Like the way the NRA was slammed for wanting cop killer bullets, and wants the streets filled with assault guns. Your fight against street crime, through fostering gun paranoia in the media, paints the law abiding citizen as being a gun lover/nut case of high irresponsibility, and this places you at risk of life, because of such. So, all of the 20,000+ hand gun laws has gotten us, is a gun paranoid public at large, who thinks these laws really made them safer, and 911’s call to Duddly Doo Right, is going to save the Just like the quote of New Jersey’s finest lefty paranoid Wing Nut,….. http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/states/new_jersey/44094… http://lautenberg.senate.gov/~lautenberg/press/2003/01/2003729742.html And, this one, takes the cake!!!!!!! Doesn’t he get it!!!!!!! LOL, the terrorist, like the criminal, is not scared off by any freaking law. http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/11/18/terrorists.guns/ They, freaking just could not give a shit. They have their own source for them. They ain’t going to Joe’s Gun Shop to get ‘em. All these gun laws have done, is taken away the ability for the common man to defend himself. We are a disarmed public, at the mercy of the criminal, and now,…. the terrorist. This just flies in the face of sound thinking and logic. Case Closed. BTW, I missed the debate. Had to work, and had customers in all day long. The wife forgot to tape it for me.
Where have you been the last couple of years, Rich? The above is like saying "You guys keep telling me the sky is blue without offering any proof." Colin Powell got up in front of the U.N. and publicly presented phony evidence to justify invading Iraq — how much more obvious does it have to get before you’ll be man enough to admit you’ve been duped? >THIS, is a case of one getting stuck with the responsibility, and the other on the outside free to >criticize and characterize, the one holding the responsibility.

That’s the burden of incumbency — Dumber’nyuh’s not an unknown anymore, it’s now common knowledge that he’s both dishonest and incompetent. He’s obviously bungled his responsibility, the only question left is whether Kerry is a reasonable risk as an alternative — I think that’s a slam-dunk yes, ymmv. Presidential reelection campains have always been referendums on the incumbent — even our greatest wartime president barely got a second term because the outcome of the Civil War was still in doubt in the minds of many voters when he ran, and Dumber’nyuh is no Lincoln! >Kerry has the unique advantage of being the outside critic, doing the Monday morning quarterbacking >BS.

Same goes for any challenger — but we do elect challengers when the incumbent’s performance is judged deficient. Look up Carter, Jimmy and Bush, George H.W. for recent examples — neither got a second term because neither performed well enough to deserve one! >Based on what was in front of both Kerry and Bush, BOTH agreed on the same intel, at the same time, >as did other governments.

Except Kerry was presented with cooked intelligence while Dumber’nyuh’s people were the ones cooking it — big funkin’ difference! >SORRY, I ain’t buying any of this shit. >Now, all I hear is Kerry singing Bush’s song. >Wow, imagine that.

He’s always been strong that way — ask Sen.
Exactly right — and exactly the way every U.S. president has worked for almost a century. Working with other countries won two world wars and the cold war, working alone has never resulted in success in a non-trivial conflict. Want to invade Granada or nab Noriega alone — that’s fine. Want to occupy a vast country with 25 million people, many of them hostile, alone — that’s a recipe for disaster. >If the tables were turned, would the situation be anymore correct!!!!!!!

Absolutely — Kerry would have put Iraq on the back burner where it belonged and concentrated our effort and resources on Al Qaeda were they belonged. There was no urgency to deal with Iraq, that was invented because this president wanted to invade Iraq way before 9/11/01 — the attacks of that day, with a little booster shot form lies and exaggerations, just made his ambitions tenable politically – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Now, since you think my post was a joke…… let’s paste a little thing you did not bring with you >here. > >> CHENEY’S MISLEAD: "I have not suggested there’s a connection between > >> Iraq and 9/11" > >> THE TRUTH: As the Washington Post reports today, Cheney has repeatedly > >> insinuated and "strongly suggested" that Saddam Hussein was behind the > >> attacks on September 11th.[2] > >As did Edwards. Go read his speech > >from Sept 12, 2002. So get off > >your high horse, unless you’re going > >to blast both of them. Otherwise, > >you’re in the same moral swamp as > >whomever you’re blasting. > At worst, Edwards was falling > for the administration’s line > of BS just like most of > Congress — but Cheney was > involved in *creating* it. > Edwards is on solid ground, > Cheney is up to his lying > mouth in quicksand. >So, you have those in the news, editorial, Op Ed, (Hi Ed <wink>) mass media all trying to pull a Dan >Rather, and scoop the next guy. You know, the wanna be’s after http://www.drudge.com/

Absolute bullshit — Iraq was a phony priority at a time when we had *much* more important fish to fry, fish that are still swimming around uncaught! >You HAD to go after Saddam, to open up his shell game. Even the inspectors could NOT say, there >were NO WMD’s anywhere in Iraq.

Wrong war, wrong place, wrong time. There was virtually zero risk in putting off dealing with Saddam Hussein indefinitely — if there was any real danger, his mideast neighbors would have supported us like they did in Gulf War I. In terms of terrorism against the U.S., Iraq was a big fat zero. >We are in Iraq, not because of Bush, but because of the actions of Saddam Hussein, himself ONLY!!!

Dumber’nyuh made the decision to invade an unrelated country when the U.S. was under threat from elsewhere — that on him, and he should pay for it with his job! >Had he not fucked with the world, we’d not be in Iraq!!!!!

On that we agree — but not on the verdict. >Clinton did before Bush, what you claim Bush did. And, on a no bid, who the freaking hell was there >to bid against Haliburton.

It’s a matter of scale, Rich — past a certain amount you simply do not award a contract without bidding. There’s no reason the work couldn’t have been spread around to several companies — that would have stood a chance of keeping them honest! >Who the hell could do it better and cheaper the Haliburton on a placed bid!!!!!!!

Carvin uses surface mount technology in some of their amps now. Your are now in computer land with board swaps. The Carvin difference is, they are NOT as cheap as your sound card, and your local computer doesn’t stock any of the cards used in a Carvin.
I have and use one, one with the genuine -simulated-tube preamp. Got a LOT of knobs, gizmos, hannebogens and thatastats–But when you find YOUR sound, it makes it very loud. Years (and many trips to the chiropractor) ago I had an SVT head that probably made my "65 PBass sound even better–but not that much better. I have the 2-10" combo and bought an extra headshell to swap around. IMHO it is a good buy on a par with the Hartke and mid-priced SWR lines. Jeff

I’ve heard some disapproving comments from repair techs about Carvin amps, cooling fans unwisely used as load-bearing supports, a heat sink that is a live element of the circuit, enough to make me pull back from buying one.

Thanks, Jeff. At least I will not have to worry about being caught short of power. I was going to buy the next one down, but with only one hundred dollars difference between the two, what the heck. Like you, I do like the sound of tube bass amps. However, their high weight and fragility makes them impractical for me. I too have a bad back and I also have numerous hernias. I had been looking for a pristine Acoustic 370 head, but quickly learned that they were going for $500 or more. I’m not going to pay that much for a thirty year old electronic device. I must admit that I am having some difficulty in discerning which brands are average and which are high-end. Price does not always provide an accurate indicator. Truthfully, the Behringer BX3000T has been doing a fine job so far, but I wanted something a little fancier to place atop my newly arrived Acoustic 301 enclosure. I have a very inexpensive 2×10" enclosure that I am going to power with the Behringer head. It should be interesting to see how those two little speakers handle Mr. B’s 300 watt output. It is an X-Audio $99.95, 4-ohm enclosure that is rated for 400 watts rms. Who knows, it may well cause one heck of a black confetti explosion. But I doubt it. Ed Cregger

I have one and use it twice a week for practice and gigs. Needless to say, I like it a lot. I bought the amp used and cheap because it was broken. I repaired a few of the traces and have not had a problem since. The sucker is loud (if you want it to be). The built in compressor and noise gate are nice….no more pedals to lug around.. My only complaint is that I would like the compressor on a footswitch. Oh well. I have SWR amps, but find that they sound sterile. I also have newer Ampeg amps but still like the Carvin better. David PS I have a R600 Series 1 that I will sell cheap!

Oh, they’re true. It’s one of those classic designs where everything’s fine until something goes wrong, then it is very, very wrong. Carvin is hardly unique in that way, but that doen’t mean I have to pretend to like it. The amp mounting system is fine until you drop or abuse it. I’d prefer a design that survived abuse gracefully. Double sided tape and a plastic box fan housing is not my idea of a solid power amp mounting system. Ron

FWIW, I used a trade mark 60 for a trade show. I liked it. Just clean with a L4 into a Boomerang phrase looper. Sounded fine, a good clean channel. Sounded like music. No problem. AW

i’ve had mine for about 7 or 8 years now and totally dig it. love the clean channel. not so crazy about the distortion channel but the clean channel sounds good w/ a distortion pedal so it really isn’t an issue. good for home practice/recording and lightweight enough to make bringing it somewhere not involve a trip to the chiropractor. =-) PJ

I used to own a sansamp GT-2. My favorite pedal ever. Does the amp sound like this pedal. I would either buy a small amp and use this or the tri-ac, or buy an all-in-one. I use a distortion pedal on my tube amp, but keen to plug stright in.

NOT > good. You need to put that beast down after 45min-an hour and give > yourself 10-15 minutes to loosen up again, just like working a gig. > You can’t go 3 hours at a time and not expect the body to retaliate in > one form or another, imho. > Charlie S. > W5CDS

I sincerely agree with Charlie on this one. Ed Cregger

> Do yourself a favor. See a real doctor first. The comment about it being a > symptom of a cardiac problem could very well be true. > Tackled early, these things are much easier to deal with and treat. The next > symptom might be a funeral. Good luck.

Yikes! I’m not ready to meet Jaco just yet!!

Response:

> Get a strap which take your two shoulders. > i build one when i played my 5 string which was louder than my actual 4. It > does exist but i don’t remenber the brand. Ask Donna; she bought one; if i > remember correctly > And like said Rob; work your shoulders body-building; not with the idea to > be the new Schwarzenneger; but simply to maintain shoulders and back.

You know, I’ve seen these fleece/leather pad things that you slide your regular strap through – big, funny-looking things, but I’d always assumed that they’d be very comfy. I may try to find one of those for rehearsals. I can’t say that I’ve seen any around lately though…

Well, you’re not too young to have a physician take a peek and collect some baseline data. Sorry for being so morbid. Most of the other fellows are probably right. It’s probably a result from straining and playing in unusual positions. The other fellow was correct in that shoulder pain is something that should be treated seriously, since the same thing that makes it sore could also show up a problem with the ticker. Good luck. Ed Cregger (just call me Gramps)

> Any sports medicine doctors here? > Finally, pulling this all together, yesterday was my first rehearsal with > these guys – three hours – no breaks – new, heavier bass… > Last night, I had the most horrendous pains in my left shoulder and down > into the upper left portion of my back. This seems like a lot more than > just a bit of muscle irritation because the pain wasn’t just near the > surface but deep into my shoulder. I took Motrin and rubbed BenGay all over > it, but could barely sleep. Right now I’m just really sore. I should be > practicing tonight, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. Well, I did > pull a stool into my music room and may try a little bit sitting down with > the bass on my leg.

My case went like this: I went to an audition for the first time after a 10 year break, we played for about 3 -4 hours, when I got home, I felt like I was beaten up by a group of angry people. I know I did tense up a bit, first time after all that time and all, but the next day I was ok. Really, do go to a doctor, then to a good chiropractor, he will teach you good ways to train your "problem areas". And follow the other advices you got here, they are very good! — Chris E-mail is fake, don’t you just hate spam…

> > Chiropractic works wonders, and it’s cheap. Make an appointment, and stick > to a regular visit schedule if you plan on keeping this workload. > This is what my wife says – get to the chiropractor… I guess I should > call tomorrow? > And all I did was play bass????? I’m a wuss…

Heh, I got a simliar thing for a little while. I figured it was because the bass was qutie heavy, and neck heavy, so took up weights for a bit of help. Then tried a lighter bass and a couple of other things… turned out most of the problem was from head banging along with the music while I was playing.
Good ole’ water is great. Gatorade has too much other stuff that you only need if you’re in the process of really burning that other stuff off. None of need the calories If need be, there is some lighter duty stuff, like… can’t think of the name right now, but it’s nearly just flavored water. Plain water is kind of a bore. — O< "Happy Carnival!" /() ^^

With my spinal surgery this thursday, I’m looking at using my Peavey Bandit if I’m going to do any gigs over the next few months. The thing is, the bandit’s 1×12 combo cab is particle board and weighs a ton. I’m thinking if I get a cab made for it out of solid pine and put in a decent neodymium speaker, I ought to be able to get the weight of the whole thing downto 25-30lbs. Do any of the custom cabinet makers fit odd sized combo amp chassis’ into custom sized 1×12 combo cabs? I assume I’d have to send the guy the chassis or do some accurate measurements… Jaz — http://www.jackzucker.com

Jaz – good luck with your surgery! In my experience, cabinet makers will do whatver you pay them to do. Have you considered the advantage of separating the head and speaker in to a piggy-back unit? You can probably get both pieces to a perfectly manageable weight, and by carrying one in each hand, you’ll be better balanced and dave your back some additional stress.
This isn’t an answer to your question, but it’s an option. I use a Peavey Envoy 110. 30 watts. 10 inch speaker. Has many, but not all of the knobs/features on the bandit. I get a great sound out of it, and it’s very light; I’d guess one third the weight of a Bandit. From car to the stage in one trip, guitar in one hand, amp and chord bag in the other. No heavy lifting at all. I use it for jazz and also for pop-sounding styles in my Christian band (three singers, bass, drums, keys, guitar). Many people have way too much power in their amps, so they play them with the volume knobs almost off. I usually play between 4 and 6 and have plenty of power for my jazz combo (bass, drums, guitar, voice). I’ve played one really big room in the last few months, and this amp maybe was a tad under-powered but listeners tell me they could hear me. Good luck with your recovery.
What my buddy who’s an ER Surgeon explained to me is that physiologically, our arms are not meant for that type of movement. His recommendation was to not do any type of military press AT ALL. There are other more safe exercises for the same muscles which do not put the stress on the shoulders and upper vertabrae. The problem is that you are compressing your vertabrae by lifting the weights above your head. This compression can lead to problems like mine. Believe me, you do not want to go through this type of problem… I’ve been in agony for almost 5 months. The operation I’m having (anterior cervical discectomy fusion) involves replacing 2 discs with bone fragments, installing a permanent metal plate with screws, enlarging the foraminal pathways, and grinding away some bone spurs.
Any doctor who truly wants to help people will offer advice or treatment that cures the problem in the most efficient and effective manner, no matter if the patient is in their office or at a social function. Too many "doctors" treat the symptoms and not the problem, and when the patient returns with a recurrence of symptoms, they pass them off to a surgeon or "specialist". Go to a doctor when you have back pain or a splitting headache, and you’ll get pain relievers and muscle relaxers. Go to a good chiropractor and you’ll get faster relief without the pills, and less chance that the symptoms will recur. Don’t get me wrong; they each have their place in health care. I know first-hand the value of both practices. Look at it this way: I wouldn’t take my car to a body shop for engine problems, and I wouldn’t take it to an engine shop to have the frame aligned. (The analogy may be a bit broad, but you get the picture.) Monte

> The poor thing travelled all the way back with us in a little plastic > container and I had to put it in my thermal lunch bag and carry it into > Craker Barrel when we stopped for lunch – it would have baked in the car.

So thoughtful > Thanks for the pic of Laurie playing my Urge. > I thought you might like that > I asked her if she knew who the bass belonged to… she didn’t. She said she > just picked it up and liked it.

Hmm… well, after I dug it out from the person who was sitting ON it (thinking it was part of the sofa?) in the the other room, I handed it to her, and explained she might find it easier to play than the Silver Sparkly G&L ASAT, which is nice, but the 32" scale, Light strings and low action on the Urge just makes it soooooooooo easy. In fact, when I could no longer play my 40lb. Thumb bass, and my wrist and fingers were telling me I’d never play again, I bought the Urge. It’s just that easy to play. I was well chuffed when this guy in an orange > vest (Mark… who was this guy?) was starting a jam session and out of all > the basses that were there, chose to play mine.

Lesse, a guy who is a stranger, hadn’t played in YEARS, walks into the jam, with JT playing a double neck 7 string, over looks all the botique crap, and grabs the familiar, yet pretty Warmouth, with flats. Pretty good praise/acid test I’d say. Now… about his wardrobe… I bet he owns a purple tank-top by weeks end By the way, my brother says "Nice write-up. She said such nice things about you… good thing she met the nice brother ", so thanks for the kind words he he he he.

Chiming in for PL… Those were brand new TI Jazz flats.
Laurie goes way back with us. They still tease me ‘unmercilessly’ about the time, back when Laurie and Tammy had the same hairstyle and color, we were camping and I sidled up behind Laurie and put my arms around her waist and squeezed. I think it was embarrassing for everybody… anyway, she lives with some friends of mine now and there’s a bass I sold him in the house, and I guess she’s been tinkering with it. I figured she’d get a kick out of the summit, and she did! After almost everyone had left, I found her playing Rob’s Urge. That dang 7 nation Army song is still stuck in my head! > I was well chuffed when this guy in an orange > vest (Mark… who was this guy?) was starting a jam session and out of all > the basses that were there, chose to play mine.
And what about that turtle, huh?! It’s still alive. Folks, (wayyy OT… more bass stuff below…) , but we now have a pet. On the way back to Bud’s mom’s after the summit, I called her to say that we were on our way home. She had been looking after Kurtis for the day and had taken him to see some animals. She said that he had wanted a puppy – I nearly freaked and said, "You didn’t…?" No, she didn’t… she got a baby turtle instead! /rolls eyes. The poor thing travelled all the way back with us in a little plastic container and I had to put it in my thermal lunch bag and carry it into Craker Barrel when we stopped for lunch – it would have baked in the car. It’s now living in a big glass bowl with my big piece of amythest, turned upside down, for it to bask on. It’s quite sweet really – he pokes his head out of the water and watches me when he thinks I’m not looking. Then when I look at it, he ducks under the water. I took it for a walk yesterday – it kept walking across my hands – it must have walked a mile!
Yes it did, even though I didn’t really get to play it, I just fannied around with it unplugged. There had been a spate of picture taking and all I heard was, "Linny, grab a bass and get in the picture", and Rob’s Zon seemed like a smart move. I played the Hyperbass at last year’s summit – that was a freaky experience, but gave me a good idea of the class. I recall that the general consensus was that Zon is cool, but some people just dig their heels in a tad… on principle — PLL’C

One of the few basses I got around to playing was Rob’s fretted Zon. Best Zon I’ve tried yet. Man, that was nice! Sounded so good. I wish I’d had more time with the fretless. Guess I’ll have to go visit soon… We had Mark B’s Hyperbass at the last Summit, that’s a wacky one there, that is… m www.xush.net – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hey Linny, > You got to admit that Zon feels pretty solid, doesn’t it? >

> Man oh man, that looks like it was great big giant-sized fun! I’m > conflicted - I want to be there, but in the presence of so many good > players my limited skills would drive me to hide in the corner or drool in > awe…

The same thing went through my mind occasionally, but then you just start having so much fun that you forget about your own perceived inadequacies…and I don’t think there was anyone with an ‘attitude’ among the bunch. Very humble and appreciative and generous, to the last person. Now, some folks ain’t crazy about the 7′ers, and the Wishy and my FBB’s might get some funny looks, but it was all about sharing and experiencing and enjoying, and I think everybody felt that. Man, I can almost smell the patchouli… One of the best parts to me was that even some of the newer/less experienced players would jump in there on the jams and just have fun. That’s the spirit! > A question: BSIV was held in a studio, so would there, could there, maybe > kinda sorta be some clips us less fortunate ones could listen to? I’ve > gotta believe the lovely and talented Lady Linny could find some space on > the AGB site for some downloads… Mark?

Yeah, you’d think so wouldn’t ya…but it didn’t play out that way unfortunately. I’m surprised there’s even any pics to tell you the truth. We all get to having too much fun to remember stuff like that. We pretty much cleaned the rooms out as much as possible, to make room for all the bass goodies, and just didn’t have it set up to record. Maybe next year… wait a minute! Just realized… they taped it for broadcast. I think they had audio with this particular camera… I definitely remember seeing some of the tunes getting videotaped. Might be on to something here. I’ll get to tracking him down… m www.xush.net
